The Visitor.

"The Visitor" is a design of the Belgian artist Guido Deleu (°1932). "The Visitor" is handcrafted ceramics by Cores da Terra, the studio of Selma Calheira. All of them are finished with only natural elements like clay and colour pigments. The studio is located in Ibirataia, South Bahia State, Brazil. Cores da Terra has become extremely well known for developing and educating local artisans, as well as for its direct contribution to the economic and cultural development of one of the poorest areas of Brazil. Today, these products can be found in museumshops, galleries and boutiques throughout the world.

Cores da Terra.

Cores da terra Studio, provides jobs to over 100 people.  Men, women and teenagers from humble origins were patiently prepared and professionalized as highly qualified ceramists. The name itself Cores da terra, was coined by Selma Abdon Calheira because of her lifelong interest in clay and an endless research into natural pigments.  In 1996 she received the prize ‘ Gente Que Faz ‘ because of her work with economically disadvantaged people in one of the poorest areas of Brazil. Her dream becomes true : only the weak ones used to stay in her area, now there is a way to stay and to survive with dignity on their salaries, with education there will be more qualified people and perhaps the destiny of the region may change…
